Masae KANDA
The 2nd Year Master Course, Graduate Student

At the time when I was junior high school student, I liked the universe, the Milky Way and
rockets very much, so I wanted to study astronomy or aeronautics in future. In 1997 the
comet hellbop approached earth, and on 4th July 1997 the pathfinder landed on Mars. In
fact, just when I had the dream about the universe the special TV program was transmitted
about, which is the observation vehicle on Mars build by NASA, the American aviation space
agency. be seen. At that time, the technician team discussed the question "How can we
land a probe on Mars at low cost" and various test were reported in the program. Finally,
an until now not yet used method was applied, instead of a rocket-controlled soft landing,
the probe was wrapped in an large airbag which bumped on the Mars surface. Watching the
program, the probe suffered a very strong shock. From that time on, my dream is to
became a technician in a team succeeding with such a big project. I wanted to study
materials like the technicians who saw in the program. After the entrance in university I
absolved the JABEE material science course and participated in two circle activities, first,
playing violin in orchestra and second, watching stars at night in the astronomical circle. So,
I spent my college time putting my energy in both, study and circle activities. After entering
the graduate school I participated in an international French-Japanese scientific meeting
for the first time and I received a good impulse. Even now I keep the challenging dream at
the time of the junior high school student in my heart.

Yasuyuki OKABE
The 1st Year Master Course, Graduate Student

When I was third grader in high school, thoughts came into my mind, I want to choose an
university and very vague "I want to do things related to the space". So I choose Tokai
university and because it contained the words "aviation and astronautic" it was an easy
choice for me to enter the course of "aviation and astronautic material sciences". At that
time I didn't even know at all what the course name means, neither the research contents
of each laboratory and I was full of doubts "Do I you really want to study this subject ?".
But as the classes began, they very easy to understand and I was impressed by the variety
of the classes and packed by the charm of materials application combined with the
research content of the professors: My interest in the field of materials deepened very
much. Moreover, it can be said that materials are the source of all industries as well, and
they are related with many fields of science. When I attended many classes from other
subjects entitled as "special lecture", given by teachers of other universities or from
industry, I realized that various fields of science can be seen with the eye of material
science. Furthermore, Tokai University makes most of the advantage of the unified graduate
school university, as classes of other departments and other subjects can be taken freely.
When I, in such way, touch various fields, think about my own future with widened eyes, and
deepen the relation between materials and various industries, I will proceed in the future to
those fields, and will be able make important contributions. Students, who enter a graduate
science school, worry most about one thing, the graduation research, isn't it. The professors
have various specialized research fields and each laboratory has an individual atmosphere,
but at Tokai University students have the opportunity to enter laboratory one year in
advance for trial. In the material science department you certainly will be able to meet the
professors in their laboratories, find it out !

Geum-Chan HWANG
The 2nd Year Doctor Course, Graduate Student

I am doing research in advanced semiconductor processing within the wide field of
ceramics by changing the composition and characterization. When I worked for a ceramics
manufacturing company in South Korea, I didn't know properties of the actual ceramics at
all. I proceeded to the Tokai University unified graduate school in order to study advances
ceramics more deeply. After graduation, I entered the doctor course and I attend a joint
lecture, which is transmitted by TV to other Tokai university campuses as well. I appreciate
the wide field which I can study in the unified graduate school. Everyone try it too, by all
means !
